Islam Denounces Terrorism

Islam Denounces Terrorism

“God calls to the Abode of Peace and He guides whom He wills to a straight path”. (Qur’an, 10:25)

God commands justice and doing good and giving to relatives. And He forbids indecency and doing wrong and tyranny. He warns you so that hopefully you will pay heed. (Qur’an, 16:90)

As Muslims, we strongly condemn the terrorist attacks on two major cities of the United States of America on September 11, 2001, which caused the death and injury of thousands of innocent people, and we offer our condolences to the American nation. These attacks propelled the important issue of the true source of terrorism to the top of the world agenda. Thus, it has been announced to the entire world that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance that summons individuals to compassion and justice. Many world leaders, leading media organisations, television and radio stations said that true Islam forbids violence, and encourages peace between people and between nations. The Western circles that have come to a full grasp of the religion of Islam and are well-informed about Islam as commanded by God in the Qur’an noted clearly that the words “Islam” and “terror” cannot stand side by side, and that no divine religion permits violence.

This book maintains that the source of the terror that we condemn is definitely not from a divine religion, and that there is no room for terrorism in Islam. This is made clear in the Qur’an, the main source of Islam, and in the practices of all true Muslim rulers, the Prophet Muhammad being the foremost of them. This book reveals, in the light of the verses of the Qur’an and with examples from history, that Islam forbids terrorism and aims to bring peace and security to the world.

As is known, for centuries, various acts of terrorism have been carried out in different parts of the world by different groups for a variety of purposes. Sometimes a communist organisation, sometimes a fascist group, and sometimes radical and separatist factions assume responsibility for these acts. While countries like America often became the target of attacks by racist and marginal terrorist groups, the European countries have been centre stage for violent acts carried out by terrorist groups. 17 November in Greece, RAF (Red Army Faction) and Neo-Nazis in Germany, ETA in Spain, Red Brigades in Italy and many other organisations seek to make their voices heard through terror and violence by killing innocent and defenceless people. The nature of terrorism changes with changing world conditions and increases its impact and power with the new means made possible by developing technology. In particular, mass communication tools such as the Internet extend the scope and influence of the terrorist activities considerably.
If one is looking for the cause of an act of terrorism, one must look for its source in anti-religious ideologies. Religion enjoins love, compassion, forgiveness, peace and living according to high moral standards. Terrorism, on the other hand, is on the side of cruelty and violence, causing pain, bloodshed and committing murder.

Besides the Western organisations, there are also other terror organisations of Middle East origin. Terrorist attacks are carried out by these groups in all corners of the world. Sadly, the fact that the perpetrators of various terrorist acts carry Christian, Muslim or Jewish identities cause some people to put forward claims which do not concur with divine religions. The truth is that even if terrorists have Muslim identities, the terror they perpetrate cannot be labelled “Islamic terror”, just as it could not be called “Jewish terror” if the perpetrators were Jews or “Christian terror” if they were Christians. That is because, as will be examined in the following pages, murdering innocent people in the name of a divine religion is unacceptable. We need to keep in mind that, among those who were killed in New York and Washington, there were people who loved the Prophet Jesus (Christians), the Prophet Moses (Jews) and the Prophet Muhammad (Muslims). Unless forgiven by God, murdering innocent people is a great sin that leads to torment in Hell. No one who is religious and fears God would do such a thing.

The aggressors can commit such violence only with the intention of attacking religion itself. It may well be that those who carried out this violence did so to present religion as evil in the eyes of people, to divorce people from religion and to generate hatred towards those who are religiously inclined. Consequently, every attack on American citizens or other innocent people having a religious facade is actually an attack made against religion.
Religion commands love, mercy and peace. Terror, on the other hand, is the opposite of religion; it is cruel, merciless and demands bloodshed and misery. This being the case, the origins of a terrorist act should be sought in disbelief rather than in religion. People with a fascist, communist, racist or materialist outlook on life should be suspected as potential perpetrators. The name or the identity of the triggerman is not important. If he can kill innocent people without blinking an eye, then he is a nonbeliever, not a believer. He is a murderer with no fear of God, whose main ambition is to shed blood and to cause harm. For this reason, “Islamic terror” is an erroneous concept which contradicts the message of Islam. The religion of Islam can by no means countenance terrorism. On the contrary, terror (i.e. murder of innocent people) in Islam is a great sin, and Muslims are responsible for preventing these acts and bringing peace and justice to the world.

A response to this article “A VIEWPOINT – ISLAM AS A RELIGION OF LOVE?”

E-mailed to the editor

I am saddened  that your web site should promote propaganda in the form of an excerpt from a book ‘ Islam denounces terrorism.’ The article is typical of Islamic rhetoric produced for consumption by gullible westerners. The article feigns revulsion for actions which are typical of the way Mohamed & his Islamic revolution operated from the sorry  dawn of the dark ages, which now threaten to return with a vengeance. The quotes from the Quran are out of context. The statement, ..Religion commands love, mercy and peace. Terror, on the other hand, is the opposite of religion; it is cruel, merciless and demands bloodshed and misery…is a travesty of Quranic doctrine by any measure. For the fact is, that love & mercy as we know them [ through Jesus ], are non existent in the Quran. Part of the problem is that most Christians are intellectually  lazy, & remain ignorant of the Bible [ for they read it hardly at all ] , & therefore are unable to judge the venom of  Quranic teaching [ which they have not read at all ].

In a similar vein, to this propaganda in your otherwise inspiring web site,  some months ago, the ABC ran a series on the so called prophet Mohamed.  This series, screened on Compass during Ramadan, [ the Islamic period of prayer & farting ], put forward a highly dishonest account of one of the most blood thirsty  psychopaths in history. The series, demonstrates appalling lack of research & disregard for  the facts of history, in order to run a TV programme which seeks to be all things to all people, at the expense of Truth.

The so called documentary series presented the prophet off  Islam as a man of peace, ‘whose very visage emanated  love & compassion.’ To this effect, testimony was supplied by some so called scholars of Islam, one of whom was a western Caucasian woman.  At no point did these programs have the honesty to address the reality which is well documented in the annals of history, by prominent Islamic scholars. No mention either was made of Mohamed’s 17 or so wives,  some of whom were the obligatory ‘ war widows’ of the men he murdered. Nothing was mentioned of his lust for little girls, recorded in history by his  ‘ marrying’ a 7 year old girl, Ayisha.  The Islamic writings, [ Hadith & Quran], do not concela that this  prophet from Hell was on occasions inspired by Satan. History recored that after an intial phase of social seduction, where he made the local Arabs believe that he was  be a messeneger of peace, eventually gained some strategic victories, & became inebriated with the lust of killing, raping & looting. He gathered an eager band of like minded brigands around himself, &  provoked many battles. He was ruthless to his enemies, even those who simply attacked him verbally. He organised brutal assassinations of poets who mocked his self proclaimed prophet status. His original sympathies with Jews and Christians as “Peoples of the Book” were superseded by harsh treatment when they did not follow Islam. In one infamous episode, Muhammad rejoiced as his henchmen beheaded hundreds of Jewish males of the Beni Quraiza tribe who did not side with him. The Hadith records how the blood of these Jews overflowed the trenches like a river in flood. The prophet is quoted as
saying, “The sword is the key of heaven and hell; a drop of blood shed in the cause of Allah, a night spent in arms, is of more avail than two months of fasting or prayer: whosoever falls in battle, his sins are forgiven, and at the day of judgment his limbs shall be supplied by the wings of angels and cherubim.”

In reference to the Qur’an, many so called modern peaceful Muslims  have drawn attention to the famous  passage in Surah 2:256: “Let there be no compulsion in religion.” This verse is said to support the notion that Islam is tolerant, supposedly proving that   jihad means spiritual endeavour..this is the kind of propaganda that leads intellectual giants like George W Bush to declare, ‘ Islam is a peaceful religion’, & then attend church services with Muslim leaders. These are the same leaders who deliberately omit the conclusion of that passage..  For Surah 5:33 reads,
“The punishment of those who reject  God and His Messenger,  is: execution, or crucifixion, or cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter.”

Bloody expansionism was also justified through original Islamic law that divided the world into two realms: Dar al-Harb (the land of war) and Dar al-Islam (land under Islamic rule). Both Paul Fregosi’s Jihad in the West and Jewish scholar Bat Ye’or’s Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam document the reality of Muslim genocides long before the notorious Christian crusades of the Middle Ages. This paradigm is proclaimed in Mosques all around the world. Ironically, in the government subsidised mosques which are sprouting in so called western nations.

Out of the vortex of these realities emerge two different perspectives among modern Muslims. Islamists consider their actions a true jihad or “holy war” against infidels and the enemies of Islam. They believe it is right to target America, “the great Satan.” Osama bin Laden believes that the Qur’an supports his campaign, that the prophet would bless his cause, and that Allah is on his side. But the vast majority of Muslims supposedly believe that nothing in Muhammad’s life or in the Qur’an or Islamic law justifies terrorism. The truth is that  Bin Laden accurately expounds the ideologies of Islam. His beliefs & actions represent classical Islam.  Bernard Lewis, reputed to be a great historian of Islam, noted in The Wall Street Journal that throughout history, Muslims have given jihad both spiritual and military meaning. Lewis also pays particular attention to the legal traditions in Islam about what constitutes just war. After noting the many limitations placed on military jihad, he writes, “What the classical jurists of Islam never remotely considered is the kind of unprovoked, unannounced mass slaughter of uninvolved civil populations that we saw in New York.  Lewis like so many western intellectuals & political leaders,  fails to see the obvious, that terrorism is intrinsic to Islam. Like so many others, he fails to take the brutal decrees of the Quran at face value ‘ Kill them [ Jews & Christians ], where ever you find them.’ Terror in the form of Jihad  has always been the modus operandi of Islam, this was established within the first decades of the movement.  That is how & why Islam spread like fire, subduing Christianised nations like Syria & Egypt in the space of a few years.

Human Rights Record

The natural outcome of the Jihad, [ normal Islam ] is   opposition to human rights. This surprises westerners, who are gullible, & assume that all peoples have the same perception of justice that is taken for granted in our society.  Why do Muslim countries have such deplorable records on human rights? Data made available by Freedom House, an organization that monitors political and civil rights in every country of the world, supports this assertion. Of the 41 countries whose population is at least 70 percent Muslim, 26 are considered not free, and 13 are partly free. Only two are free-meaning they protect political and civil rights as defined by the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. We can express the abuse of human rights in Muslim countries in other ways. Why is it that the government of Saudi Arabia welcomed Allied Forces to free Kuwait but forbids entry of non-Muslims to its country?

Western governments allow Muslims to talk freely about their faith. Why can’t Christians do the same in many Muslim countries? Muslims rightfully express concern about the denial of liberties to Palestinians. But are the rights of Jews protected in Indonesia? Are Hindus free in Pakistan? Human beings are being traded as slaves in Sudan, a fact documented in Paul Marshall’s Their Blood Cries Out. Has the government in Khartoum been flooded with protests from every corner of the Muslim world? Likewise, no one can deny the lack of women’s rights under Islam, regardless of Muslim apologists’ passion to the contrary. The widespread practice of female genital mutilation in Muslim countries alone signals the reality of women’s oppression. Women are forbidden
even to drive a car in Saudi Arabia. Until they were freed suddenly in mid-November, eight expatriate Christians were on trial in Afghanistan on charges of Christian evangelism. Followers of Jesus in many Muslim countries are executed for sharing what they believe. It would be wonderful to know that the Muslim leaders who joined President Bush in public to express solidarity against Osama bin Laden were already on record as condemning the persecution of these Christians in Afghanistan. If not, why not?

Muslim books of hate sold
Liam Houlihan, religious affairs reporter
24 June 2005

LITERATURE filled with hatred of Christians, Jews and non-Muslims is being sold at a mosque near a Melbourne home raided by ASIO.

Books sold at the store attached to the Brunswick mosque tell Muslims they should “hate and take as enemies” non-Muslims, reject Jews and Christians, and learn to hate in order to properly love Allah. The texts say Muslims should learn military tactics and suggest that if a person speaks ill of Islam it is acceptable to kill them.

They urge Muslims to strike back against “the barbaric onslaught from their enemies — the Jews, Christians, atheists, secularists and others”. Pages are devoted to legitimising episodes of violence against Jews who insult Islam. “A Jewish woman used to abuse the Prophet and disparage him. A man strangled her till she died. The Apostle of Allah declared that no recompense was payable for her blood,” one book recounts.

A similar example is given of a man killing the mother of his two children because she “disparaged the Prophet”; he also was declared clear of any crime. “When they (non-Muslims) meet you, they say, ‘We believe’, but when they are alone, out of frustration and rage, they bite off the tips of their fingers because of you,” one says. “O you who believe! Do not take the Jews (Yahood) and Christians (Nasara) for friends (Awliyaa). They are Awliyaa to each other. And the one among you that turns to them is one of them.”

Readers are instructed by the books not to feel compassion for non-Muslims, not to trust them, and not to speak well of them. One book says faithful Muslims should learn military tactics.

The group of books were bought from the bookstore of the Islamic Information and Support Centre of Australia, which is in the same building as the Brunswick mosque. One, The Ideological Attack, describes “the Jews” as striving to corrupt the beliefs, morals and manners of Muslims. “The Jews scheme and crave after possessing the Muslim lands, as well as the lands of others,” it reads. “Supported by a demonic global plan as well as unlimited financial backing, this attack aims at domination and hegemony over the Islamic world; dividing it, attacking it culturally and morally and perverting the true image of the religion. “Therefore it is amongst the priorities of the Islamic call (da’wah) to break this attack and to counter it with every legitimate means of da’wah possible.”

One text says of devotion to Allah: “As regards hatred for His sake this is an essential prerequisite for loving Him.” A book on “Muslims Living as Minorities” mentions Muslims fighting in Afghanistan and discusses “jihad”, or holy war, as a collective and individual responsibility. Another quotes classic anti-Semitic conspiracy text The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, stating Jews want to make Muslims “the ass of the chosen people”.

A response to this was sent in to the Editor by another reader : Though poverty, ignorance, race, culture and politics obviously play a role in Islamic Extremism, it’s hard to deny that this article encapsulates the essential religious justification in Islam that is at the basis of what the fighting’s all about”

UK Muslims issue bombings fatwa

BBC World News Report

More than 500 British Muslim religious leaders and scholars have issued a fatwa in response to the London bombs.

British Muslims at Friday prayers

The religious decree expresses condolences to the families of the victims of the atrocity and wishes the injured a speedy recovery. It states Islam condemns the use of violence and the destruction of innocent lives and says suicide bombings are “vehemently prohibited”. The formal legal opinion was issued by the British Muslim Forum at Parliament. More than 50 Muslim religious leaders from around the UK stood together outside the Houses of Parliament to hear the fatwa read out.

Prayer for peace

Gul Mohammad, secretary general of the BMF, quoted the Koran saying: “Whoever kills a human being … then it is as though he has killed all mankind; and whoever saves a human life it is as though he had saved all mankind.” He went on: “Islam’s position is clear and unequivocal: murder of one soul is the murder of the whole of humanity; he who shows no respect for human life is an enemy of humanity. “We pray for the defeat of extremism and terrorism in the world. “We pray for the peace, security and harmony to triumph in multicultural Great Britain.” The BMF is an umbrella group launched in March 2005 with nearly 300 mosques affiliated to it. The fatwa will be read out in mosques across the country on 22 July 2005.

Just Read the Qu’ran

From an Assyrian Christian in 2005 (Mehm Bayram from Turkey)

One of the fundamental questions in this debate from a Christian viewpoint is why would rational, often kind and educated (non-ignorant people) Muslim men take to terror and the massacre of so many ‘innocent’ people? Why would they see themselves as ‘waging a righteous war’ sanctioned by God? It does not seem to me an ‘unreasonable’ thing to do if one reads the Qu’ran. Many Muslims would say things are being taken out of context. Many passages speak of waging war but they were specific instructions by God to his ‘Apostle’ in a specific historical situation. The problem for me as an educated man is that as I read the Qu’ran, I can easily see that there is a principle of warfare against non-muslims who refuse to submit to Islam’s rule taught in the Qu’ran. It is then the duty of Muslim people everywhere to aid those that do so. In other words, if the Qu’ran is truly God’s revelation (not just an angelic mediator’s), and if there is clear principle of warfare to achieve the domination of the ‘religion’ of Islam being taught in that revelation, then such perpetrators of terror, violence and hatred are the ‘true believer’. The people they kill are not ‘innocents’ in our Christian understanding, and the unwillingness of Muslims to denounce and expose such people is understandable. Furthermore, it sets up the likely struggle between ‘Islam-faithful-to-the-Qu’ran’ (as these people see it) and all other ideologies until Islam is supreme throughout the world and any opposition is tolerated as an example of Islamic mercy and good-will to other people.

Dear Editor,

This probably reflects the “George W Bush (& official Western liberal democratic)” view of Islam – that Islam is a religion of love.

This is also probably the view of many ‘moderate’ muslims regarding the ethics of Islam. The question is whether this viewpoint written by someone sympathetic to Islam is what the Qu’ran teaches?
